Skydiving is the ultimate adrenaline rush—at least according to those who live for it.

However, this extreme activity is not without its perils, as the tragic example of Ivan Lester McGuire demonstrates.

Despite being an experienced skydiver, one fatal error cost him his life, and his frightening final words still send shivers down people’s spines today.

Nobody suspected anything strange.

Skydiving is supposed to be exhilarating—a burst of wind, a drop from the sky, and the unparalleled exhilaration of defying gravity. For 35-year-old Ivan Lester McGuire of Durham, North Carolina, that emotion was more than a passion; it was a way of life. With almost 800 jumps under his belt, he wasn’t only seasoned. He was adored.

People who knew Ivan characterized him as cautious, with one colleague calling him “the most safety-conscious person” he had ever known. Nonetheless, on a bright spring day in April 1988, fate handed him a brutal and unfathomable blow.

That morning in Raleigh, North Carolina, Ivan was doing his fourth jump of the day. He wasn’t jumping for pleasure; he was photographing a pupil and an instructor at the Franklin County Sports Parachute Center. It was a normal leap, one he had done numerous times before. But this time, something went disastrously wrong.

According to eyewitnesses on the scene, Ivan was fatigued. Ivan appeared preoccupied, adjusting the kinks in his new video equipment. However, no one suspected anything strange.

From 10,500 feet above the ground, Ivan observed nine parachutists leap in front of him. He hung onto the aircraft’s side until the final student and teacher plunged, then let go while the camera rolled, catching their freefall.

However, there was a disturbing problem: Ivan was not wearing a parachute.

“He had forgotten to put on his parachute,” said the detectives.

The Federal Aviation Administration’s Walter Rigsbee stated, “We haven’t gotten all the facts yet, but there is a regulation, No. 105, that states that the pilot must check.” “No one may jump until the pilot has checked the parachutes.”
