In instances of feeling unwell, the inclination to avoid visiting a doctor in the hope that symptoms will subside naturally is not uncommon. Unfortunately, the harsh reality is that delaying medical assistance when symptoms first manifest may lead to irreversible consequences.

Liam Griffiths, a 31-year-old man from Middlesborough, UK, faced terminal cancer and passionately emphasized the importance of regular check-ups and timely medical consultations.

Liam believed that seeking medical help earlier could have potentially allowed him to overcome the cancer. Despite his determined efforts, he received the devastating news that his condition was fatal, diagnosed with peritoneal cancer affecting the abdominal lining.

In an interview, Liam disclosed experiencing stomach swelling, chronic constipation, cramps, and vomiting in March 2023. Despite severe symptoms, he hesitated to consult a doctor due to being self-employed and fearing wage loss.

As symptoms exacerbated, Liam eventually sought medical assistance, initially receiving a misdiagnosis of Crohn’s Disease. A month later, he learned of the accurate diagnosis – cancer.

Commencing treatments promptly, Liam’s cancer proved resistant to chemotherapy. Despite his challenging circumstances, he found strength to convey a crucial message: urging individuals not to delay doctor visits when sensing something is amiss with their bodies.

“I want to push this message because if just one or two people go to the hospital and get checked because of my mistake and my story, that would be amazing,” he expressed. Liam’s cancer was discovered at an advanced stage three, emphasizing the potential benefits of early detection.

Facing an uncertain prognosis, Liam’s friend, Eve Bannatyne, initiated a fundraiser, garnering over £18,000 for Liam’s private treatment, as NHS chemotherapy proved ineffective.

Despite his limited lifespan prognosis, Liam maintained hope and decided to focus on fulfilling wishes and living his remaining time to the fullest. Regrettably, Liam passed away on February 1, 2024.

The memorial service, led by Rev John Hearn, celebrated Liam’s life, highlighting his warmth, humor, and caring nature. Liam’s story serves as a poignant reminder to prioritize health, even if it involves sacrifices such as wage loss or rescheduling commitments.
