This wasn’t simply an audition; it was a narrative of survival, redemption, and music’s tremendous ability to heal!

Formerly homeless singers bring Terry Crews to tears with their moving audition on AGT.

A group of previously homeless singers, known as the Freedom Singers, provided this harmonizing treatment on the coveted stage of America’s Got Talent (AGT). They drove the crowd and even the program presenter, Terry Crews, to tears with a song that reflected their past challenges and final victories.

These vocalists, who hailed from Skid Row, a neighborhood in downtown Los Angeles known for its homeless population, were not far away from the harsh realities of their history. “We’re located not far from here in a community called Skid Row … in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, where five people per day die,” said Pete, one of the performers, emphasizing the brutal reality of homelessness.

But it wasn’t only their unique stories of suffering that left everyone in awe. It was their collective resonance, unity in song, and the powerful message they wanted to convey.

The Freedom Singers did not enter the AGT stage only to wow with their singing abilities. Their mutual objective went well beyond the spotlight.

“We represent many important causes,” one member explained. “Some individuals who were homeless may have transitioned to transitional housing, just like those who have lost loved ones and are now homeless.” When we encounter someone on the street, we want to encourage them not to ignore them.

As the Freedom Singers ended their performance, their voices echoing the deep sounds of “Under the Bridge,” the audience reacted immediately. The standing ovation reflected their remarkable journey, but the judges’ remarks indicated the tremendous effect of their performance.

“This was more than just a song,” judge Howie Mandel explained. “More than just an audition; it was needed.”

His colleague, Judge Simon Cowell, agreed, stating, “This was a special audition.”

However, it was presenter Terry Crews’ backstage reaction that truly brought attention to the Freedom Singers’ tale and performance. Crews were noticeably impressed by the singers and came up to express their profound appreciation.

“I want to thank you,” he said. “I want to express my gratitude to you for everything you do for the community and so many others.” I am extremely moved right now, and I just want to thank you for being here.”

His voice trembled as he said, “God bless you.”

With their amazing audition, the Freedom Singers not only moved unanimously to the next round of “AGT” but also brought home the truth of the suffering of the homeless, utilizing their voices to raise awareness on a worldwide issue that needs to be addressed.

The Freedom Singers illustrated, via a powerful performance and a poignant message, that one’s past does not define one’s future and that music can inspire, heal, and unify even in the face of hardship.
