Tom Hanks will not be getting an accolade from the United States Military just yet.
The Elvis actor, 69, was scheduled to receive the 2025 Sylvanus Thayer Award on September 25 at a ceremony given by the United States Military Academy at West Point, but the event was canceled by the school’s alumni organization, according to The Washington Post.
The decision to cancel the event was communicated in an email to teachers by retired Army Col. Mark Bieger, president and CEO of the West Point Association of Graduates, according to the source. In his email, he explained the rationale behind the final decision.
“This decision allows the Academy to continue its focus on its core mission of preparing cadets to lead, fight, and win as officers in the world’s most lethal force, the United States Army,” the professor wrote.
Bieger would not say if Hanks will still receive the 2025 Sylvanus Thayer Award at a later date or in a different format, according to The Washington Post.

PEOPLE has reached out to the US Military Academy at West Point and Hanks’ representatives for comment.
In June, the United States Military Academy at West Point announced Hanks would receive the Thayer Award, which is given annually to an outstanding citizen of the United States “whose service and accomplishments in the national interest exemplify personal devotion to the ideals expressed in West Point’s motto: ‘Duty, Honor, Country.'”
At the time of the announcement, the school’s board chairman, Robert A. McDonald, stated that Hanks will get the prize in part because he represents the life of a “service member” in several of his films, including Saving Private Ryan, Forrest Gump, and Greyhound.
“Tom Hanks has done more for the positive portrayal of the American service member, more for the caring of the American veteran, their caregivers, and their family, and more for the American space program and all branches of government than many other Americans,” McDonald told reporters in a statement.
The academy also stated that Hanks was being honored for his military commitment, having previously served as national chairwoman of the D-Day Museum Capital Campaign and as a national spokesman for the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.
Reacting to the upcoming honor at the time, Hanks said in a statement, “To be recognized by an institution whose graduates have shaped our country’s history through selfless service is both humbling and meaningful.” He also mentioned that the award ceremony would have been his first visit to the academy.

The cancellation of the awards ceremony comes during a moment of upheaval at the United States Military Academy at West Point, which has seen considerable changes during Donald Trump’s presidency. According to The Washington Post, Trump’s instructions resulted in a reversal of diversity, equality, and inclusion projects across the armed services, as well as increased scrutiny of leadership, curricula, and professors at all US military academies.
Hanks was an outspoken supporter of the Biden administration and has backed Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential race. In 2022, the actor narrated a film commemorating Joe Biden’s inaugural anniversary, which highlighted his administration’s successes. According to The National Herald, Hanks also signed an open letter supporting Harris’ presidential campaign in October 2024, along with a number of famous Greek-Americans.
