Tom Selleck has had a lengthy and highly successful career in show business. The Magnum, P.I., and Blue Bloods star is still passionate about his profession, and the next season of the popular drama series will premiere shortly. Selleck has portrayed several tough roles throughout the years. However, the 77-year-old has a history of doing his stunts, which has sadly come back to haunt him.
During his childhood, Tom Selleck was uncertain about pursuing a career in acting.orn on January 29, 1945, in Detroit, Michigan, his family relocated to California, where he spent his childhood in the San Fernando Valley.
Tom Selleck—Early Life
Selleck wanted to attend the University of Southern California (USC), but his family couldn’t afford the tuition. In 1962, he graduated from Grant High School. After enrolling in Los Angeles Valley College, he opted to remain at home with his parents to save money. In his early days, Tom appeared more inclined to pursue a career in sports rather than acting. He was a promising basketball player who aspired to play professionally. With that in mind, one can only imagine how thrilled he was to be offered a basketball scholarship to the University of Southern California.
“I’ve never done school plays. I had no interest,” Tom told the AARP in 2015.
However, playing basketball at the elite college level was easier said than done. According to KSL, he only scored four points in seven games for the USC Trojans in 1965–1966.6. The next year, he went scoreless in three games.
According to an excerpt from USC’s student handbook, Tom was an “agile and quick performer who adds depth to the front line.” The business administration major has excellent jumping ability and mobility. The rapidly developing shooter has pleased instructors with his effort throughout practice. He must focus on improving his defensive skills.”

But, eventually, Tom was simply unable to compete with his larger, taller comrades.
“I was pretty good, but I wasn’t good enough,” Selleck said.
Tom Selleck started his acting career. Selleck knew that basketball was unlikely to be his future career. He had a backup plan, though, and took on a side job to help pay for his school. The hopeful student initially landed a handful of TV advertisements and starred on The Dating Game.
Looking back, it was not his greatest moment, but it had far-reaching consequences for his future.
“Humiliating and embarrassing,” he said of his experience on the dating program. “I lost. Twice. I wasn’t really humorous or glib.”
Soon after, 20th Century Fox offered Selleck a position in its talent program. He began honing his talents, but after two years, he took leave to serve six months on active service. Upon his return, 20th Century Fox dropped him. But, rather than giving up, he was convinced that he would succeed as an actor.
In the early 1970s, he scored tiny roles in a number of television shows. Then, in his mid-30s, Selleck appeared in six television pilots. Despite this, his major breakthrough didn’t occur.

According to Tom, this is why many people assumed he was an instant success when he earned the part of Thomas Magnum in Magnum, P.I.
Breakthrough with ‘Magnum P.I.’ In actuality, he had battled and fought quite hard.
“The luckiest thing that happened was that I didn’t get a real job until I was 35,” Selleck told me.
“When I was 25, I looked 35 but sounded fifteen. SSome exceptionally talented performers succeed as younger leading men but fail to advance in their careers because the public does not accept them as adults.
Magnum, P.I. achieved enormous success. The crime drama television series aired from 1980 to 1988, and it propelled Tom Selleck to celebrity status. He received five consecutive Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, ultimately securing the title in 1984.
Selleck had been struggling as an actor for almost a decade and was on the verge of giving up. “I think if Magnum hadn’t worked out, I’d never have worked again in this business,” he told me.
Tom rose to cult fame with Magnum, and his subsequent career has been nothing short of spectacular. Other credits include the movie Three Men and a Baby and In & Out. He also gained a new fan base when he played as Monica Geller’s older lover, Richard Burke, on the hit comedy series Friends, beginning in Season 2.

Selleck was cast as Frank Reagan in the television series Blue Bloods in 2010, ushering in a new and exciting phase in his career. The show has now been renewed for a 13th season, which will air this autumn. Tom Selleck deals with back problems. According to Celebrity Net Worth, Selleck’s net worth is around $45 million.
In many films and television shows, actors have their stunt person. It’s sometimes a risky job, but for a select handful, letting someone else execute their feats is simply not an option. Selleck had previously performed the majority of his feats on his own, albeit at a high expense. He claims his body isn’t what it used to be.
“My back’s kind of messed up,” Selleck said.
“When you do stunts in movies—which I do a lot of—you take a risk, but you also spend a lot of time sitting. After performing a fight scene, you might sit in your chair without a personal trainer advising you, “Okay, we’re ready to go, but Tom needs ten minutes of stretching and warm-up.”.”
“And I think the price,” he said, “I see it with colleagues; I talk to them occasionally. You can clearly observe the expenses associated with all those antics.s. They weren’t that difficult, but I guess it’s the stop-and-go of everything.”
Selleck previously admitted that he dislikes going to the gym, but he tries to stay active by working at the family ranch in Ventura, California.

“I own a 63-acre ranch, and I do a lot of the grunt labor. I am responsible for clearing brush and planting trees. We have around a hundred antique oaks that I planted.” I have probably planted a thousand trees myself.”
Tom Selleck’s life revolves around hiswife, marriage, and daughter Hannah.Tom’s career is undeniably impressive. Another reason to rejoice is his devotion to his wife, Jillie Mack. Despite the cyclical nature of celebrity weddings, one couple has enjoyed a blissful 35-year marriage.
Selleck told Closer Weekly that he first met Jillie Mack at a performance of the musical Cats, in which Mack starred. It was the 1980s, and Selleck’s decade-long marriage to model Jacqueline Ray had dissolved.
While Selleck claims he’s not as slick with the women as his on-screen rivals, he approached his future wife backstage, but she made the first move.
“She had to get on stage. I was dithering and hawing when she offered, “Do you want to meet for a cocktail?” Selleck recalls.
The date appeared to go well, and Selleck and Mack married in 1987 in a private ceremony. Their daughter Hannah was born a year after their wedding.
Since then, Selleck has prioritized his family over notoriety, attempting to keep his personal life out of the spotlight.
“I quit Magnum to have a family.”
In reality, he set aside his acting profession to spend more time with his wife and children.
“I quit Magnum to have a family,” Tom Selleck told People in 2012.
“It took a long time to get off the train, but I try very hard to have balance, and this ranch has helped me do that.”
“We both thought it was the best environment for Hannah to grow up in,” Jillie Mack explained.
Tom, a big enthusiast of nature and the outdoors, wanted to share his interest with his daughter. Soon enough, he’d given it to her!
Tom and his wife, Jillie, dwell on a 65-acre ranch near Ventura, where Hannah was raised. Both father and daughter enjoy horses; eventually, the two started a side business in horse breeding. Hannah went on to pursue a professional riding career, and she performed really well.
She has qualified for multiple Grand Prix-level contests and won various medals along the way.

Hannah Selleck finished fifth in St. Moritz, Switzerland; Belgium; the Netherlands; and the Canadian Pacific Grand Prix at the 2015 Longines Masters of Los Angeles.
She has a deep passion for horses. Unfortunately, Selleck broke her tibia and fibula in a 2018 incident. They advised her that she would never be able to run again, but fortunately, this was not the case.
She then turned her passion for horses into a highly successful breeding and training enterprise called Descanso Farm. Hopefully, she and her father, Tom, will be able to maintain their enthusiasm for horses for many years.
Tom Selleck will always hold a particular place in our hearts, and we wish him and his family optimal health and prosperity for the years ahead.
