Last week, while enjoying breakfast at Chik-fil-A, I noticed a homeless man with his dog sitting on the curb behind the building. Holding a sign asking for assistance, he appeared to be down on his luck but not involved in substance abuse. As I ate, I watched him, witnessing the disregard of passersby.
After finishing my meal, I decided to make another trip through the drive-through and ordered an extra-large chicken biscuit combo. Pulling up beside him as I left, I handed him the bag of food along with a small bag of dog food from my truck, which brought him to tears.
Expressing gratitude for being treated with dignity, he eagerly accepted my offer of work for fair pay. I provided my business card and some money, instructing him to meet me the next morning for employment.

True to his word, he arrived promptly the following day, demonstrating remarkable work ethic throughout the day. As we worked, he shared his heartbreaking story of loss, homelessness, and despair.
At day’s end, I paid him $80, which visibly lifted his spirits. Encouraged by the impact of my kindness, I continued to employ him for the remainder of the week, providing payment at the end of each day.
Yesterday, he requested to be dropped off at a location near the KOA campground. Grateful for the funds, he expressed his intention to purchase camping supplies, ensuring he and his dog wouldn’t have to endure the cold ground.
Seeing him transformed from a downtrodden figure to one filled with hope was deeply rewarding. He pledged to be available for future work, and despite my upcoming job being in a different location, I’ve committed to continue offering him employment.
