Twenty people, including twelve children, were injured after lightning struck a beach park in South Carolina

Lightning struck a beach area in South Carolina, causing injuries to twenty people.

On Tuesday, June 24, the County of Lexington issued a news statement stating that 20 persons, including 12 children, were treated for non-life-threatening injuries after lightning struck Dominion Beach Park.

“Multiple Agencies Respond to Lightning Incident at Dominion Beach Park.” Lexington County, SC— Lexington County Fire Service, Irmo Fire District, Lexington County EMS, and the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department responded to a reported electrocution caused by lightning at Dominion Beach Park near Lake Murray Dam on Tuesday afternoon, according to the statement.

The officials said, “Upon arrival, first responders assessed a total of 20 patients—8 adults and 12 juveniles.”

According to the announcement, 12 people were transported to three local hospitals.

The victims had non-life-threatening injuries and “are expected to recover.”

“Strong relationships with other local agencies played a critical role in ensuring a quick, coordinated response, allowing first responders to assess patients efficiently and provide the best possible care,” according to the press release. Dominion Beach Park, which was closed following the incident, is due to reopen on Wednesday “following safety assessments and clearance from authorities.”

The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department reposted the announcement on Facebook, writing, “Multiple Agencies Respond to Electrocution Incident at Dominion Beach Park.”

Lexington County spokesperson Vanessa Diaz told NBC News that the event occurred on a “super hot and sunny” day.

“It didn’t rain or anything like that; it was just a random storm cloud that went by,” she explained.

Diaz told the outlet that the lightning struck at around 5 p.m. local time at the Dreher Shoals Dam in Lake Murray Public Park, owned by Dominion Energy.
