Two singers deliver a captivating rendition of ‘Be Still My Soul,’ evoking deep emotions with their stirring duet

Anna Poolman and Mary Brewis deliver a captivating rendition of “Be Still My Soul,” an enduring hymn often referred to as the Finlandia hymn, originally composed by the Finnish maestro Jean Sibelius.

Initially featured in Sibelius’s Masonic Ritual Music, Op. 113, the hymn later found its standalone form with lyrics penned by Wäinö Sola, and later Veikko Antero Koskenniemi.

Sibelius had arranged the hymn for choral performances, and its modern version, which was first performed in 1941, continues to resonate with listeners today.

As Anna Poolman and Mary Brewis breathe life into this sacred melody, we are reminded of the timeless message it carries – a gentle reassurance that despite life’s uncertainties, God remains sovereign, as encapsulated in the scripture Psalm 46:10: “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”
