A Ugandan woman, Safina Namukwaya, who gained international attention for giving birth to twins through in vitro fertilization (IVF) at the age of 70, has joyfully taken her newborns home. The twins, a boy, and a girl, were born in late November at the Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Centre in Uganda.
The heartwarming moment was shared on the hospital’s Facebook page, accompanied by a caption expressing the resilience of a mother’s love. The post highlighted the symbolic nature of the event, showcasing Namukwaya cradling her twins alongside Dr. Edward Tamale-Sali.

In the post, the hospital stated, “At 70, Safina Namukwaya’s maternal love blossoms into a miracle, cradling twins alongside Dr. Edward Tamale-Sali. Their hands hold not just babies, but gems of hope, proving that a mother’s love transcends time and age.”
Namukwaya, a mother of three, named her daughter Shakira Babiyre Nabagala and her son Kato Shafique Kangave. The twins, affectionately known as Babiyre and Kato, have brought a new status to Namukwaya and her husband in their rural village. She will be recognized as Nalongo, meaning mother of twins, while her husband, Walusimbi Badru, will be known as Salongo, or father of twins.
The twins, born on November 29, each weighed 3 lbs., 7 oz. The hospital celebrated the successful delivery, emphasizing that it represents more than a medical achievement but also reflects the strength and resilience of the human spirit.
Namukwaya acknowledged the challenges of pregnancy at her age, expressing, “There was a time I felt very sick because of the pregnancy. I spent nearly all my savings. Then I went to a hospital and talked to the doctor about my condition.” With the help of the doctor, funding was arranged for Namukwaya to receive better care in another area.
