Valerie Bertinelli is proud of her physique.
Bertinelli, 64, discusses the backlash to her famous bikini mirror photo in a teaser clip from her appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show on Friday, December 13.
When asked by co-host Ross Matthews why she chose to publish the photo, Bertinelli replied, “Well, you know what, I have been coming to terms with my body now, aging, and I saw myself in the light, and I went, ‘Oh, I’m not mad at that.'”
The Food Network star then got up and removed her red jumper, revealing her stomach, while Barrymore, 49, applauded.
“Like all those, you know, planks and sit-ups I’ve done, you can see underneath the saggy skin,” she said with humor. “But I must say…it’s 64 years of gravity,” she said with humor. It is science. If you look closely at that image, you will notice the small saggies, which I am proud of because I am 64. “It is a belly.”
Bertinelli went on to talk about how others have attacked her physique and looks, saying she is either too thin or too fat.
“Why, oh why?’ You’re too skinny, too obese, or out of shape,’ many people say. You’re in shape. Oh, my God. I want those abs. Oh my God, you are hideous.’ What I’ve discovered is that my father was mistaken. You cannot make everyone like you. Ultimately, at my age, I’m okay with that.

“I don’t like the fact that I participated in the brain manipulation that forced us to appear a specific way,” she said. We have to be a specific weight,” she said, adding that she has come to embrace her figure. “I am a size 10.” How is that too thin? I am a size 10. How is that considered too fat? I am who I am, and this is my body.
Bertinelli shared her popular selfie on December 3 and talked about her newfound acceptance of her body after a challenging year.
At some point, I’ll share the journey my body has taken this year. But right now, every hump, bump, wrinkle, and sagging part of me is filled with acceptance and simply gratitude to be standing in front of a mirror in a hotel bathroom in midtown Manhattan, preparing to color my roots late on a Monday night,” she captioned the shot.
Posing in a black two-piece and clutching a box of hair color, Bertinelli took a selfie in front of a bathroom sink.
A day later, the “Drew Crew” member reacted to social media users who had attacked the photo.
“To all of you who judge my body, the photo, and my reason for posting it, I hope you find a place in your heart to not judge yourself as harshly as you judge others,” she said on Instagram, posting a series of fresh mirror selfies.
“I have dealt with judgment my entire life, starting from when I was a young girl,” she told me. “It has taken me a long time to realize that my judgment, with patient discernment, is the only one that counts.”
“… It’s taken me almost 3 years of emotional labor to get to this point mentally, and for the first eight months of this year, I had physical setbacks,” she stated. She went on to state, “For the first time in my life, I love my body as it is.”
“I didn’t despise my 20-year-old physique, and it’s a pity I did. Yes, it was a totally different body from the one I now occupy, but it had not yet completed the trip I needed,” she explained.
“As difficult as this road has been and continues to be, I am grateful for it, and I would not exchange this body for my 20-year-old body any day. “Ever,” she said, signing off with “XO Valerie” and a peace and love sign emoji.
