If you’ve ever visited a foreign nation, you may have pondered how you sound to non-Americans in between sampling their cuisine and beverages.
It can be tough to locate somebody who sounds too distinct from yourself in your own town or city, making it impossible to evaluate how you truly sound to those who don’t speak your language.
We now know how Americans sound to outsiders due to one TikToker, and it’s safe to say it’s mind-blowing.
TikToker the Language Simp, or @languagesimp, speaks many languages, including English, and is therefore well positioned to expose how we sound to non-English speakers.
In a viral YouTube video, he gives a short speech—if you can call it that—in weird gibberish that sounds a lot like English but makes no sense.
If you’ve ever played the video game The Sims, you’ll recognize the speech.

Many people have gone to the YouTube short’s comment area to express their feelings, including non-English speakers who assessed TikToker’s imitation of Americans.
Of course, such groups are best placed to comment on whether it is correct, and it is safe to assume they are.
“As a foreigner, I can 100% confirm that this is all I hear when Americans talk,” one user remarked.
“My native language is Spanish, and this is exactly what English sounds like to me!” said after a second. Nobody has ever expressed it so precisely.”
Meanwhile, a third person said, “As a foreigner, I can confirm that all North Americans sound like The Sims.”

“This is actually incredibly accurate,” wrote a fourth. And I say this as an ESL instructor.”
However, enraged Americans battled back in the comments section, with many shocked that they could sound that way.
“How?”He doesn’t even speak real words,” one user said.
And another remarked, “Okay, this is how it feels when I forget how to understand language and have to ask someone to repeat what they said and just hear this.”
