Many dog owners worry about the theft of their beloved pets. Certain uncommon and costly dog breeds might be prime targets for dognapping.
However, one woman’s technique for protecting her dog from thieves has sparked a lot of attention and debate online, with some applauding the concept and others doubting the owner’s motivations.
Chloe has a 2-year-old Great Pyrenees dog named Dandy, who has a very uncommon appearance: he has brilliant red fur, owing to pet dye applied by his owner.

Her decision to color Dandy red elicited varied reactions on TikTok. Many comments read “poor dog,” with others questioning whether the coloration is healthy, while others praised the canine’s distinctive appearance, comparing him to the famous Clifford the Big Red Dog.
Chloe has informed viewers that she exclusively uses vegan, pet-safe dye (apparently from Opawz), and in subsequent videos, she has explained her reasons for the dog’s stunning transformation.
She explained that part of the reason was to “keep him from getting stolen,” since the Great Pyrenees puppy is a “rare breed in [her] area.”
Chloe also stated that Dan seemed to appreciate his new color since he “loves people and kids” and that the red dye makes the dog “more approachable.”

She also stated that she wants to “educate others on safe pet dye practices,” and in other videos, she shows viewers how to dye their own dogs.
Dandy’s TikTok videos, which have received 10 million likes and over 318,000 followers, have continued to spark discussion.
Detractors have questioned Chloe’s intentions, claiming that the dye was designed to attract attention online rather than deter would-be dognappers.
But defenders have pointed out that Dandy appears to be a happy and well-cared-for dog who has no idea what color he is, and that the owner has the freedom to dye her dog for whatever purpose as long as it is safe and humane.

Dandy’s TikTok account, despite its popularity, has been dormant since February. Dandy’s most recent Instagram image, dated July, shows him returning to his natural fur color, with the dye faded:
Chloe noted that he “needs a touch-up” and that he will be “red soon,” but it’s unclear what color Dandy is right now.
However, a significant number of responses advised her not to re-dye the dog, preferring Dandy in his “true colors.”

What do you think of the decision to dye Dandy bright red? Is it a pleasant method to keep the dog secure from kidnappers, or is it an unneeded and ineffective treatment?
