A 19-year-old goth with black eyeliner smeared like shadows, piercings glinting beneath the stage lights, and edgy clothing. He sang hauntingly beautiful notes from a 1918 opera with unearthly strength and accuracy. Skeptical whispers died down, leaving the room in awe

Andrew De Leon appears to be an average goth man. But you won’t anticipate his booming voice. And you won’t be anticipating the pitch of his voice or his music selection—it’s the complete opposite of what I expected.

Andrew had never sung in front of anybody, not even his friends or family, and certainly not in a crowded stadium. So when he went onto the America’s Got Talent stage in Austin, Texas, for his audition, it was even more magical.

Growing up, Andrew was a huge admirer of both Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie. He felt like an outsider, yet listening to them provided an escape. Andrew progressively acquired an interest in singing, but at the time he auditioned, he had never sung in front of anybody, even his family. Andrew, 19, astounded the audience with his excellent and fantastic version of “O Mio Babbino Caro.”
