Lucy, who has Down syndrome, was orphaned for the first six years of her life.
Fortunately, this situation did not endure indefinitely. Lucy was adopted from China and placed in a loving family in the United States. When she eventually came, her adoptive family was concerned since they didn’t know how their young daughter would react or cope with her new circumstances, particularly after living in an orphanage since birth.

Brent and Audrey Shuk, Lucy’s adoptive parents, were nervous before meeting their daughter. The couple already had five biological children, but they felt there was room in their hearts for another.

Lucy initially meets them at the airport in Houston, Texas, when she arrives in her new nation and with her family. When she arrives, she glances around nervously, and when she finally meets her new parents, she is overcome with emotion.

Audrey hurries to greet her new daughter, whose emotions have likewise taken control. But then Lucy says something that brings everyone to tears. It was difficult for the tiny child to speak anything, but she plainly uttered “MOM” at that time.

The story moved everyone, and the couples were both surprised and delighted.
