Details emerge about Virginia plane’s flight instructor’s last moments before student crashed plane

Viktoria Theresie Izabelle Ljungman, a young teacher, unfortunately, perished in an aircraft accident in Virginia, and an air traffic control tape captured the precise moment she died.

Ljungman, 22, was in command of the single-engine plane in which Oluwagbohunmi Ayomide Oyebode and another unidentified 18-year-old student pilot were flying when it crashed from roughly 100 feet (30 meters) at 3 p.m. on October 6, 2022, at Williamsburg International Airport in Newport News, Virginia.

According to the New York Post, Oyebode hauled the vehicle up at an incorrect angle before takeoff, causing the plane to stall.

Ljungman was killed in the disaster, which featured a Cessna 172 aircraft, while her two Hampton University pupils were taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center in critical condition.

Oyebode was then transferred to VCU Medical Center in Richmond for further treatment.

The pilot may be heard responding to control employees seeking clearance to commence their voyage in the air traffic control recording.

“Cleared for takeoff, 97883,” says the pilot. According to audio available via LiveATC.net, “Caution wake turbulence” is a usual warning given when taking off behind a larger aircraft.

“We got a crash!” someone exclaims shortly after.

“883, are you OK?” The controller inquires, referring to the plane’s identifying tail number, N97883.

They then asked again, “Are you on this frequency?” Sadly, they were unsuccessful, and air traffic control rushed emergency personnel to the area.

It’s unclear who is conversing with air traffic control in the recording since any of the three pilots may have spoken with the ground crew before the collision.

Following the outpouring of sympathy for Ljungman’s family, the teacher’s family said in a statement that they are “devastated” by “this enormous loss.”

They told WTKR, “She wasn’t even 22 and a half years old, and we are heartbroken by this enormous loss.

“Knowing Viktoria meant loving her for reasons other than her family. Everyone who met Viktoria liked her warmth and brilliance, as well as her incredible devotion and work ethic.”
