George Clooney explains how he uses his 7-year-old son Alexander’s chess losses to teach him an important life lesson…

George Clooney is teaching his kid some important life skills.

The Wolf’s actor, 63, went on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday, February 18, to discuss his new Broadway play, “Good Night, and Good Luck.”

While speaking with presenter Stephen Colbert, 60, Clooney said that his 7-year-old son Alexander enjoys playing chess and competing in competitions. The Ticket to Paradise actor uses his son’s gaming losses to teach him a valuable lesson.

“He’s 7 years old, [and] playing a lot of older kids,” Clooney told Colbert. “As you might expect, he doesn’t always win. And he gets irritated, so I say, ‘Listen, you shake the guy’s hand and say nice game; I’ll get you next time.’ And that’s how you learned to follow those rules.”

Clooney and his wife Amal Clooney, 47, married in Italy in 2014 and had twins Alexander and Ella, 7, in June 2017. Since the twins’ birth, the Clooneys have been exceedingly selective in their work assignments to prioritize Alexander and Ella.

“In marriage, and now with the kids, you give away the selfishness of only looking out for yourself,” said Clooney to PEOPLE. “What a fantastic thing. Amal and I discuss it every day. “We feel extremely fortunate.”

Clooney spoke with Michael Strahan on Good Morning America in December 2023 about raising twins and what surprised him the most.

“When you have twins and you’re raising [them] the same time, the same way, and they’re completely different human beings, you realize how little say you have in who they are,” he told me. “They come out with an opinion, and it’s amazing to watch how different my kids’ personalities are.”

When the twins were four years old, the Ocean’s Twelve star talked to Marc Maron on the WTF with Marc Maron podcast about being an older parent to them.

“They’re funny, and they pull pranks on me,” Clooney remarked of his children. “I just look at them thinking, I couldn’t be happier, and I couldn’t be more surprised at how happy I am.”

During the conversation, The Tender Bar director also explained how being an older father influences his decisions in life and work. “The hard part is being 60 and just running around with it,” Clooney remarked about keeping up with his children.
