After 17 seasons on the air, Howie Mandel felt he’d seen everything.

However, on a recent broadcast of “America’s Got Talent,” the experienced performer was left “gobsmacked” by a little girl who began the show as an audience member and concluded it as a finalist! Howie describes Madison “Maddie” Taylor Baez as “magical.”

Maddie is an AGT superfan who has watched the program consistently since she was four years old. The 11-year-old from Yorba Linda, California, arrived at the event to audition, but the producers asked her to sit in the audience instead. During commercial breaks, showrunners frequently urge audience members to sing in the hopes of discovering a hidden talent. On this day, they were rewarded beyond their expectations!

Maddie jumped up and performed an a cappella version of “Amazing Grace” that had the entire audience roaring. Not only that, but she piqued the judges’ interest, prompting them to invite her to come up on stage and demonstrate her abilities.

Maddie fought away emotions as she informed the judges she had always wanted to be on their stage. Then she sang a lengthier rendition of “Amazing Grace” to prove she was the genuine deal!

“My jaw hit the desk,” Howie later said. “I was startled and entertained, and my heart is still pouring from that experience. There was something about that voice, that clarity, that strength, that made us turn our heads and simply utter, ‘Wow.'”

After she sang, the audience expressed their thoughts by cheering for the Golden Buzzer. Howie opted to follow their desires and press the button to send Maddie directly to the final rounds! None of the judges could believe she had advanced from the crowd to the finals so rapidly.

Maddie plans to use the award money to finance cancer research, since her father has been fighting colon cancer for the past nine years. Her father says she learned to sing at his hospital bedside.

“I’ve been battling cancer for the past nine years, and that’s how she learned to sing,” he explained. “She would sing to me in the hospital during my operations and chemo treatments. She’d sing to me and help me improve, and now I’m doing well.”

Maddie feels like she’s living her dream and can’t wait to participate in the finals! We can’t wait to see what this small kid with a huge voice will do next.
