Leading the technical revolution in women’s figure skating, 15-year-old skater became the first female to land three quadruple leaps in one international competition

Russian figure skater Alexandra “Sasha” Trusova gained notoriety when she won a silver medal in the 2022 Summer Olympics. Her performance in the Skate Canada figure skating competition captured the attention of onlookers, and she went on to garner over 12 million views on YouTube every three years for the previous three years.

Trusova is renowned for having made a substantial technical advancement in women’s figure skating. In the past, men’s skaters’ programs were more likely to include intricate quadruple leaps. Rather than being behind in skill, female skaters frequently trailed behind in this area because of what society considered to be “appropriate.”

There have been a lot of changes in women’s figure skating over the years. American skater Theresa Weld faced criticism for a single salchow jump, deemed too suggestive at the time due to its elevation of her skirt over her knees, rather than its technical skill. Jumps, however, have become a vital component of figure skating in the modern era, demonstrating how expectations and perceptions of women’s figure skating have drastically changed.
