LiV Warfield sings SPECTACULAR song written by Prince, The Unexpected, leaving AGT judges stunned

When the 2024 Summer Olympics finished, few realized we weren’t done marveling at elite-level individuals at the pinnacle of their abilities. America’s Got Talent returned after a two-week vacation in August 2024 with eleven outstanding performances, but R&B singer Liv Warfield stole the program with her rendition of “The Unexpected,” which happened to be penned expressly for her by Prince. This incident was not particularly significant.

Warfield had already impressed fans with her first audition, which earned her a Golden Buzzer from Simon Cowell. But after the following performance, Cowell said, “If this was the Olympics for singing, you would have won the gold medal.”

Judges Sofia Vergara and Howie Mandel shared similar appreciation. Vergara described Warfield’s act as “perfection,” while Mandel, a self-proclaimed Prince fan, told Warfield, “The Purple One knew what he was doing when he gave you this gem.” “That was a million-dollar performance.”

And it’s easy to see why Warfield received such excellent scores. Beyond her incredible voice, she had unquestionable star power and the ability to bring us all back to the days of 1970s rock and roll.

According to one spectator, “If Prince and Janis Joplin had a baby, it would be Liv Warfield!”

Simply watch:

Warfield’s relationship with Prince began in 2009, when she joined his New Power Generation band. Though she stated that “backing up Prince was a dream” and that she has previously achieved multiple chart-topping triumphs on her own, she believed that her full potential had yet to be realized, which prompted her AGT audition. Her quarterfinal performance has prompted Cowell to proclaim another key moment in her career.

“It felt to me like all those years you’ve been climbing the ladder to where you want to be, it all came out in those three minutes,” according to him.

Indeed, what a monument to the power of consistently pursuing your ambitions. While raw ability is impressive, preparing for major possibilities still requires significant effort. Even if she did not win the tournament, Warfield is already a winner.

Warfield is pursuing her musical career in her birthplace of Chicago and has been invited to play the Star-Spangled Banner at a Chicago Cubs baseball game in May 2025.

She continues to honor her Prince roots in her stage performances, participating in a tribute concert series in the summer of 2025. She has also released many albums, beginning with “Embrace Me” in 2006 and continuing until her 2023 album, “The Edge.”

Warfield thanked Prince for her musical growth, telling NPR in 2014:

@livwarfieldThank you @cubs for inviting me out to sing. ✨Beautiful Day, Beautiful People,Energy at @cubs game! With my @zinzannichicago Family❤️✨. Although sis, was hiding out like the 🦀 that I am. 😂😂🤘🏾 Love y’all! Yesterday was necessary 🫀. PR Queen @aidanhenri 😘✨🫶🏾 @princenolov3 😘

“He has inspired me first and foremost as a performer. Just enjoy taking chances initially. It took me a while. For example, I believed I was a terrific performer, but when I joined the other power generation group, I realized, ‘Whoa, this is a whole different universe for me.’ And even in the composing and arrangement, he taught me how to listen to the music truly. Listen to each instrument and provide room, and I wasn’t thinking about those things. I wanted to hear everything. I thought, “If everyone plays, it’s good.” It may sound like a cacophony at times, but the experience just honed my hearing.

Just another example of how musical icons live on not just via the music they create, but also through the talent they foster and cultivate.
