Michael Sheen pays off £1,000,000 in debt to 900 strangers, all with his own money

Michael Sheen has received praise for clearing 900 people’s £1,000,000 debt.

The Twilight Saga actor, 56, invested £100,000 of his own money to establish a debt acquisition firm to assist Welsh individuals who have been struggling financially.

Watch the actor explain how it works:

The new documentary Michael Sheen’s Secret Million Pound Giveaway will show how the inhabitants of Port Talbot are dealing with the shutdown of their final blast furnace, which marks the end of conventional steelmaking in South Wales.

“I’ve always wanted to do something big to expose the unfairness of the system,” he stated in the teaser.

“I want to see if I can help people going through a tough time, and at the same time I want to do something that gets people’s attention.”

During his appearance on BBC’s The One Show, Sheen detailed the transaction.

“£100,000 to buy one million worth of debt seemed like a good deal to me,” he was saying.

“I didn’t have £100,000 to toss around. So I wanted it to be effective.

“But when I realized I could do this, get £1 million worth of people’s debt and just write it off, it seemed like a good thing to do.”

Sheen needed to keep the license secret for the documentary, which took two months to obtain.

The Special Relationships star from Newport continued, “People bundle their debt.” Then debt-buying firms can acquire those bundles and resell them to another debt-buying company at a lesser price.

“So, even though the number of individuals who owe remains the same, those who possess the debt may sell it for less and less.

“So I was able to put up a corporation and acquire £1 million in debt with £100,000 of my own money since the value had dropped because they didn’t think there was a good prospect of getting the money back. I had no clue what had transpired.”

After helping people, Sheen knows their backgrounds but not their identities.

This comes after filming in Port Talbot allayed his worries about the business.

“It was the day the last shipment came in for the steelworks at Port Talbot, and the woman who worked in a cafe told me the story of men who were losing their jobs sitting in tears,” the actor said. Then the reality dawned on him.

“People are dealing with unforeseen circumstances such as sickness, a washing machine breaking down, or an automobile. Alternatively, it could simply be Christmas. You’ll need some assistance to get through these moments.

“People are getting into spirals of debt, and once you get underwater, it’s very hard to get out again.”

Ahead of the release, fans commended Sheen for his charity, with one user writing, X: “Really moved by this man who works tirelessly to help people and spread kindness and awareness, using his platform for so much good.” ” He’s a true inspiration.

“He’s It’s too good for the world.”ndness, empathy, sense of justice, and desire to fix things appear to be from another world,” another added.
