Music prodigy passes away at 17…

Smith, a rising talent in the industry, has plans to release her debut album in 2025.
Simon Raymonde, whose label Bella Union had recently signed Smith to record her first album, gave the tragic news.
He commented on social media: “We are all horrified and heartbroken to learn of the unexpected and untimely death of our artist and close friend Nell Smith over the weekend in British Columbia.

“Nell, just 17 years old, was gearing up for the release of her first solo record on Bella Union in early 2025, a collaboration with Penelope Isles’ Jack and Lily Wolter in Brighton.”

Nell’s family has also released a statement following the teen’s unexpected death.
We are deeply saddened by the unjust snatching away of our feisty, brilliant, distinctive, and beautiful daughter on Saturday night. We are stunned by the news and don’t know what to do or say,” the sorrowful social media post started.
“She had so much more to experience and contribute to the world, but we are thankful that she was able to do so in her 17 years. She has left an indelible imprint on the word and an unfillable void in our hearts.” Hold your kids extra tight tonight, and please leave us to figure things out. We’ll yell when we need you.”
Nell had worked with The Flaming Lips on the cover album Where The Viaduct Looms, and its leader, Wayne Coyne, spoke about the tragic news at a gig in Portland, Oregon.

Coyne informed the audience: “We have a very terrible announcement to make tonight. We have a Canadian acquaintance named Nell. Three years ago, we collaborated with her to create an album using Nick Cave songs. She passed away last night, and we received some very sad messages today. She reminds us once again of the power of music and the inspiring nature of being with people we care about.”
Nell’s family and those close to her have not yet disclosed the cause of her death.
Many people in the profession have expressed tribute to her, as have her admirers.
