Pirates of the Caribbean actor and surfer Tamayo Perry has died

Perry, 49, suffered an attack on Sunday, June 23, while surfing off Mlaekahana Beach on Oahu’s North Shore, Hawaii.
Honolulu Emergency Medical Services reports that Perry had many shark bites when they discovered him.
According to Sky News, a caller reported the attack, claiming to have seen a man who appeared to be suffering from shark bites.

Moments before 1:00 p.m. local time, emergency personnel made their way to the beach.
Around 1 p.m. local time on Sunday, June 23, paramedics declared the actor deceased after lifeguards on a jet ski hauled the surfer back to shore.

Since the fatal attack, Ocean Safety officers have posted shark warning signs in the vicinity.

On the North Shore, he is highly regarded. He’s a world-renowned professional surfer,” stated Kurt Lager, interim director of Honolulu Ocean Safety.

Kurt Lager continued, “Everyone loved Perry as a lifeguard, but he loved everyone else even more.” Tamayo’s charisma was contagious.

Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi described Tamamayo as a “legendary waterman and highly respected individual.”
In addition, he called Perry’s passing “a tragic loss.”

Perry became well-known for his ability to surf the notorious Pipeline wave, which breaks at Oahu’s Ehukai Beach.
Over the years, he participated in the Pipeline Master Trials frequently and even won the trophy in 1999.

Perry’s exceptional surfing skills have attracted the attention of TV and movie producers over the years. As a result, he appeared in multiple episodes of Hawaii Five-O, the 2002 movie Blue Crush, and the 2003 movie Charlie’s Angels 2.

Perry, however, is best known for his role in 2011’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, in which he costarred with Ian McShane, Johnny Depp, and Penélope Cruz.

The 2010 job selected Perry and four other candidates from a pool of around 7,000 applicants.

Regarding his audition, “I had to get pretty nasty to stand out,” he remarked. “There were a few herniated squints.”
The surfer made an impression, as evidenced by joining a limited group of individuals known by the production staff as “core pirates” instead of extras.

In an interview with Star Advertiser before the film’s premiere, Perry expressed his excitement about the role, saying, “We are right there in your face.”

You will see more of us than you’d like, and it will be in three dimensions. We’re a group of naughty pirates.
