When I stumbled upon this rendition of the gospel classic “Old Rugged Cross,” I was utterly blown away. It’s undeniably one of the most remarkable versions I’ve ever encountered, and I’m certain you’ll share my sentiment—especially once you learn who the vocalist is.
Penned in 1912 by American evangelist and song-leader George Bennard, a native of Youngstown, Ohio, this hymn initially saw Bennard crafting the first verse solo. However, he later joined forces with his traveling companion Ed Mieras to complete a second verse and introduce harmonies.

What sets this rendition apart is that all four vocal parts are performed by a single individual: Kaoma Chende. Kaoma, born into a family of six children to a pastor, has harbored a deep love for music since his youth. Remarkably, he films himself singing as part of a quartet, portraying all four roles himself. If you scrutinize the photograph above, you’ll notice that it’s all one and the same man!
Kaoma shared that he was inspired by a similar concept he encountered on YouTube and felt compelled to give it a try. “Naturally, that piqued my interest, so I researched the software he utilized, watched numerous tutorials, and taught myself how to create the videos,” he explained.
While I’m not typically an avid enthusiast of gospel songs, this rendition left me spellbound! All credit goes to the incredible talent of Kaoma, whose heartfelt performance truly shines through.
