Virginia police officer’s heartfelt farewell to his beloved wife on AGT brought tears to both the judges and the audience

Mervin Mayo, a 19-year Richmond Police Department veteran, entered the stage in his dress uniform to sing Ed Sheeran’s ‘Thinking Out Loud.’

Before performing, Mayo told his remarkable story. “I grew up in a housing project in Richmond, Virginia,” he told me. “There was a program called the Police Athletic League.” A cop called Curtis Simmons took me under his wing because I was a bit naughty growing up, and he kept me safe.

This early action had a significant influence on Mayo’s life course. “I’m alive today because he kept me out of it,” Mayo explained gratefully. “I tell people I’ve seen more murders as a child than I have as a police officer.”

Mayo now serves as a school resource officer for at-risk adolescents. “I’m not just a regular police officer,” he told me. “I work in a school with at-risk youth and want to keep them from going to jail.” His wife, Mechelle, is the director of school counseling at Richmond Public Schools.

Mayo’s musical adventure began as a kid, when he joined the church choir. He has discovered that music may be an effective coping tool for the demands of his profession. “When I’m going through some stuff, I jump on my piano,” he told me. “Otherwise, I’d be all over the place.” I need that in my life.”

Mayo’s wife pushed him to audition for AGT, despite the fact that he had previously just sung karaoke. “My wife is the reason that I’m here today,” Mayo stated. “She advises me to follow my dreams. And music is in me, yes.

When Mayo sat down at the keyboard and began to sing, his deep voice filled the theater. Throughout the performance, he sent loving glances offstage to his wife, who watched proudly. The intensity in his words moved many people, with judge Heidi Klum and audience members wiping away tears.

After Mayo finished, his wife blew him a kiss from the wings. “How’s that feel, baby?” he inquired. The judges were thrilled by Mechelle’s expression of devotion and urged her to join her husband onstage.

The judges praised Mayo’s performance and character. “You’re both great people,” Judge Howie Mandel said. “You are the folks who keep us safe, as well as those who attend our schools. You’re both serving the community, which is fantastic.”

Sofia Vergara was also impressed: “You’re a lovely pair, and your voice is amazing.” Super romantic, how beautiful that you love her and are singing to her, and I believe people will love you.”

Simon Cowell remarked, “You really do have a good voice, and everything you did was genuine.” I just think it was a beautiful moment, and I believe people will truly enjoy you.”

With four passionate “yes” votes, Mayo proceeded to the competition’s next stage. He and Mechelle departed the stage together, smiling with excitement.

Mayo’s performance on AGT is not his first experience with viral fame. In 2020, his cover of Marvin Sapp’s ‘The Best in Me’ went viral online. Mayo, also known as the “Gospel Cop,” routinely uploads songs to YouTube.
