Jade Ward and her four children, Aspen, Kalila, Nevaeh, and Elodie, resided in Adelaide, Australia. After receiving her, Elodie and her family began adapting to having a newborn in the house.
She could hear the fire alarm and the screams of her elder son, Aspen.
Ward and her boyfriend were responsible for three toddlers as well as a newborn. Nonetheless, they adored their bundles of joy and felt fortunate to have a house filled with their children’s cackles and cries.
Elodie, the couple’s youngest child, began cluster feeding at five weeks and had a cold. Ward noticed her newborn girl was having difficulty latching due to a clogged nose one day and spent many hours caring for her.
It was quite difficult for the Australian mother to care for her infant while also caring for her other three children. Ward requested her spouse take the infant to the hospital after work on July 8, 2021, believing that prompt treatment would help her feel better.
While Elodie accompanied her father to the hospital, Ward placed the two older kids, Aspen and Kalila, on the couch with their feeding bottles and blankets. She put her third child, Nevaeh, who was 18 months old at the time, in her crib and put on a DVD for the kids.

When the mother of four noticed that her children were calm and ready for sleep, she walked into another room and put on a movie. She kept her baby monitor turned on since she knew her partner would be back soon with baby Elodie.
Ward had no intention of falling asleep, but she was so fatigued that she did. When she eventually awoke, the house was in a state of disarray. She could hear the fire alarm and the screams of her elder son, Aspen.
Ward stated that she raced directly into the lounge when she noticed flames and smoke. Even young Nevaeh’s infant crib was on fire, yet she was unharmed. Ward stated that she grabbed a hose and extinguished the flames.
Soon after, her sister arrived, followed by an ambulance and a man claiming to be a burn specialist. Although Nevaeh suffered a slight burn on her nose that would ultimately heal, her elder brother Aspen, who was four at the time, was covered in scars.
Ward then learned of her son’s bravery in putting his own life on the line to save his infant sister. “[Aspen] knew she was in trouble. He told me he climbed in to get Nevaeh out,” she recalled.
When Aspen saw his sister’s crib engulfed in flames, he went in to save her, bearing the brunt of the fire with him. While the crib collapsed beneath his weight, his mother claims he kept Nevaeh from becoming stuck within, which saved her life.

All Aspen needed to do was shield his little sister like a protective older brother, and that was precisely what he did. Regarding her warrior son, Ward expressed:
“Most grownups wouldn’t be that brave. I don’t think he quite knows how special it is… what he has done.”
The South Australian resident shared that her son had moments where he looked at his burns and wondered what other kids at school would think of them. She added:
“He says at school he wishes to cover his burns because he wants the children to still play with him and he doesn’t want to get harassed for his burns.”
Little Aspen has a long road to recovery because his burns will likely require multiple surgeries and treatments. But Ward noted that none of it was strong enough to deter her sweet boy’s spirits and his genuine love for his baby sister. She said:
“He’s my hero; he’s her hero.”
The mother-of-four created a GoFundMe fundraiser to cover her son’s medical expenses and help revamp her house after the unfortunate incident. Ward doted on her hero son and said she was incredibly proud of his strength and kind heart.
