Over one billion individuals face disabilities. Some perceive children with disabilities as “freaks,” denying them education, subjecting them to squalid institutions, and subjecting them to torment.
Rustam, a child with altered looks, was abandoned by his biological parents as a baby.
Just before transitioning to a “disabled house,” the child experienced a miraculous event.
Before 2006, there were no protections for disabled individuals. In that year, the UN implemented a treaty to safeguard disabled individuals and children who had been abandoned, mistreated, or imprisoned.
Certain infants, like Rustam, were abandoned at the hospital due to their appearance.

Born with “several malformations,” the adorable boy lost a leg and part of a hip, and his face underwent multiple surgical procedures.
Rustam, born in Russia, needed numerous treatments to stay healthy, but he faced rejection for adoption or fostering.
In 2017, Nika Zlobin, a compassionate woman seeking to foster or adopt, came across Rustam’s photo.
The headshot displayed a void instead of a face, as recalled by the Moscow resident.

Upon expressing interest in the child, Nika and her husband, Yuri, received a list of Rustam’s needs, including speech therapy, cosmetic surgery, and a prosthetic leg.
“I read it, and I thought—well, everything is solvable,” she said. Why don’t we take the plunge?
Their initial meeting with the child exceeded expectations. “When Yuri and I arrived, they brought Rustam to the playroom.” “You know, I was ready for a lot; I thought he was in diapers, but when I met him, he seemed like a child prodigy,” Nika adds. Honestly, I was shocked.”
The timing was perfect for Nika and Yuri as Rustam, communicating through gestures, was about to move to a “house of the disabled.”
“And in a disabled home, he wouldn’t have survived,” Nika said, emphasizing that the journey would have been one-way.
The couple promptly completed the paperwork, loaded Rustam into the car, and drove him to Moscow.
“I know that many adoptive parents worry about loving someone else’s child as if it were their own. “I didn’t consider it,” Nika said, emphasizing that she treats him as strictly as her biological daughter, Iya.
His parents treat him equally and encourage his involvement in therapy.
Despite Rustam’s protests, she taught him to walk by having him move around the flat on crutches.
“Rus objected, cried, and demanded to be carried, revealing his character. “But then he got down to work and walked quickly,” she said.
Facing Cruelty.
Nika has been an advocate for disabled rights and dignity since Rustam joined the family.

Yet, some continue to mistreat the child, labeling him a freak.
“One woman wrote, ‘Let’s call things by their words, freak.'” One message stands out to Nika. “Or they write, ‘How did you decide to do this? We would not be able to live next to such a freak.’”
Nika responds compassionately, “I don’t know; maybe someone wants to always look at the beautiful.” I care more that Rustam has the cosmos within him.”
Though she has developed a thick skin, Nika admits that the attacks sometimes hurt. People tend to label things. If you’re different, a lot of evil is directed at you.”
Despite the hurtful comments, Rustam’s parents assure him that “everything is fine with him: two eyes, a nose, a mouth.” Two legs are on the way. He observes, listens, and communicates.”
The 10-year-old boy relies on his “brightness and courage,” styling his hair in ponytails and dreadlocks, and dressing boldly to express his lively personality.
Nika adds, “Rus thinks broadly and openly, reaching sometimes contradictory conclusions.” So it was easy to encourage her son to explore new activities. “Rustam never inquires about his appearance. He delighted in saying that his family is gorgeous and that he is attractive.”
Unfortunately, Nika’s Instagram account was deleted, so we can’t follow Rustam’s wild dancing and stunning hair.
She once said, “If my account should suddenly be blocked, then I’ll probably feel better because I won’t see dozens of haters commenting about my son.”
It is heartbreaking that people can be so cruel to loving parents who gave the world to a fragile child.
