In the beginning of this month, a woman from Michigan purchased her very first Powerball ticket. She ended up winning the jackpot, which was worth one million dollars.
When Joni Thompson, age 54, from Stanwood purchased a Powerball ticket for the drawing on November 8 from the Country Corner Supermarket in Stanwood, she told the officials from the Michigan Lottery that she believed she had beginner’s luck on her side and that she was going to win the jackpot.
Thompson, who had never played Powerball before, decided to purchase a ticket after seeing that the jackpot was over one billion dollars.
“I had never played Powerball before, but after seeing that the jackpot was over one billion dollars, I decided to buy a ticket,” said Thompson, who had never played the game before.
After the drawing, the winner shared their story, saying, “After the drawing, I heard a message on social media about a $1 million prize being won in Mecosta county, so I went to the lottery site to scribble down the winning numbers, and then I verified my ticket.”
After conducting some research, Thompson discovered that she had been given a prize for one million dollars.
When I found out that I had matched five numbers and was the grand prize winner, I immediately began hyperventilating, shrieking, and crying.
I wanted to make sure that I had correctly read the information that was printed on my lottery ticket, so I asked my son to scan it using the lottery software that he had on his phone.
“I am still at a loss for words” — that is what she said, and I quote her. It is impossible to put into words what it feels like to win one million dollars.
Thompson mentioned that she plans to set aside part of her revenues and put some of them toward the initial expenses of her new business venture.
