This is the moment when a newborn koala who would later be given the name Phantom stayed by his mother’s side while she underwent surgery to save her life.

When this event took place, Phantom was only six months old.

The mother koala known as Lizzy sustained a collapsed lung and some facial injuries after being hit by a vehicle in Australia.

Her condition worsened after she gave birth to her young.

Phantom had the good fortune to flee the scene without suffering any injuries, and considering his young age, the professionals in the medical field concluded that it would be in his best benefit to stay with his mother.

When perched on his mother’s neck, Phantom did not stop hugging her, and it appeared that his mother was responding positively to his embraces.

“Phantom is with Lizzy during her operations and check-ups to ensure that neither mum nor bub gets stressed out,” medical staff members said in comments made to the ABC.

In a similar fashion, Phantom is placed in a “pouch” for the duration of the procedure of weighing him to ensure that he continues to feel safe and protected even after being separated from his mother.
