Reddit users have been astounded by newly installed equipment in Chinese public restrooms.

A video released by China Insider showed one individual reading a QR code on a toilet roll dispenser before being compelled to watch a brief advertisement.

Once the advertisement concluded, the machine released numerous squares of paper.

If you need more paper and don’t want to suffer through another advertisement, this unpleasant machine charges consumers 6 cents to skip.

Despite the dystopian connotations, the scheme is intended to reduce waste since officials believe individuals take more free rolls than they need.

It has now been dubbed as Black Mirror-esque on the forum site Reddit.

“Black Mirror stuff,” one user said in reaction to a news report shared on the platform.

“Brown Mirror” and “Sometimes Yellow Mirror” were two amusing additions from readers.

Then came a rush of passionate criticism, with Reddit members eager to stand firm on their convictions.

“This would last about 5 seconds in America before it got smashed and the paper was just forcefully taken out,” said one individual.

“I would smash it on principle, and I’m pretty sure I have a key on my keyring capable of opening it,” said one man.

“I’d bring my own paper and smash the dispenser on principle,” said a third disgruntled person.

On the other hand, there is a cultural background to consider and respect here.

Many individuals who read the shocking toilet-related information were aware that China rarely provides free paper in public restrooms.

“I’ve lived in China for seven years, and this is an improvement,” one of them said. “The great majority of public restrooms will not have toilet paper. “You carry a pack yourself.”

According to a tourist on TripAdvisor and other travelers on the internet, it is typically advisable to bring toilet paper with you because it may not always be available.

“Toilet paper is not scarce; it is just not supplied in many public toilets,” they further clarified. “Where to place the paper depends on the sewage system to which the toilet is linked. Hotels and new retail malls do not have this problem, but older buildings do. When necessary, there is normally a notice instructing you to place it in the bin.”

Another even stated that soap may not be included, writing, “FYI, soap is also typically not offered anywhere except hotels and sometimes extremely excellent companies (…). We immediately learned on our first day in China to always take tiny packets of tissues (available in any supermarket or convenience shop) and bottles of hand sanitizer (a little tougher to locate in stores, so we always carried them from the United States) with us wherever we went.”
