Giethoorn has lasted for more than 800 years without roadways. Residents rely heavily on boats and bicycles.

But how did Giethoorn get the look he has?

The excavation of peat in the 13th century gave rise to the city. The excavators created massive ravines that finally filled with water, resulting in islands ideal for an isolated, trackless life.

As a result, Giethoorn has become a nature haven, with lush vegetation and a diverse range of birds and fish.

Meanwhile, the characteristic thatched Dutch cottage architecture enhances the Giethoorn experience. Museums dedicated to marine life, fossils, and the city itself offer more activities than just floating. Ice skating is a common winter recreation, especially when certain rivers freeze over.

Although this location appears to be in the remote reaches of the globe, it is actually only 75 kilometers from Amsterdam. If you want to experience the most quiet and avoid crowds, we recommend visiting in April, May, June, or September.
