Something about music has the power to boost our emotions and soothe our troubled thoughts.

Sean K. Tiwanak, a musician, uses diverse songs to help him get through difficult situations. The native Hawaiian always carries his ukulele and enjoys breaking into song wherever he goes, even in a critical care unit in Los Angeles, California.

Sean has had viral cardiomyopathy for the past 15 years, which causes his heart muscle to be too weak to pump enough blood to his body. Sean had been in good health for over a decade, but a recent severe illness put him on the “high-priority” organ transplant list.

In August 2020, he received his replacement heart! Dr. Fardad Esmailian, the surgeon who conducted his surgery, stated that his patient was “on the brink of basically dying” in the days leading up to the operation. Even so, Sean reached for his instrument and used music to soothe himself and others.

In a brief video that has already impacted countless people, a doctor from Cedars-Sinai’s cardiac team joins Sean at his bedside only two days before his transplant to sing “Stand By Me.” Dr. Lily Stern had heard him sing in the ward previously, and as a musician herself, she felt it was time to join in.

“We just instantly started singing together,” Sean explained. “And when you do that, when you sing with someone, you create a tiny place that is like communion in some ways. And that was wonderful. And she’s so skilled and sings so beautifully that it simply lifted my spirits.”

Since the tape went viral, Sean has gotten well wishes and support from strangers all around the world! After undergoing surgery, doctors anticipate a full recovery in two to three months. Ultimately, he experiences a renewed sense of vitality!

“I know what it is to be blessed now,” he remarked. “Everything I do from now on is the outcome of this beautiful gift.

Sean is presently finishing his fourth album, tentatively titled “Change of Heart.” He’s even included a special song for the health-care staff who assisted him, especially Lily! To top it off, he has named the song “Angel.”
