Lacey Bower’s physicians had no clue she would be such a determined, joyful, and bright baby girl when they first saw her in utero. Lacey is over three years old and has come a long way, both physically and figuratively. She is defying her physicians and making her parents very proud! After two years of trying, Michael and Michelle Bower of Indiana were ecstatic to find they will be parents in December 2019.
They were ecstatic to find they were having a girl. However, their dreams were destroyed when the pair got sad news during an ultrasound at 20 weeks. Lacey Bower was born with spina bifida, a neural tube condition that may cause paralysis, brain abnormalities, nerve damage, and injury. Michael and Michelle had just found out they were having a daughter when they received the frightening news.

“We wanted a girl,” stated Michelle. We went from the greatest of highs to the lowest of lows in less than 24 hours.” Michelle’s physicians urged her to have the pregnancy terminated. Lacey would never be able to communicate, eat, move, or breathe on her own, they said. But the Bowers were adamant about giving their kid a shot in life. Lacey was still in her mother’s womb throughout the complex 3-hour procedure.
With the assistance of a team of 35 medical experts, doctors at St. Louis Children’s Hospital closed the hole in Lacey’s spine before she was born on April 27th! Michelle stayed in bed for the duration of her pregnancy. Over three months later, on July 20, Lacey was born via cesarean section. Lacey Bower: Little Lacey spent 18 days in the NICU when doctors found she was largely paralyzed from the waist down, but she hasn’t let that stop her!

Everyone is astounded by Lacey’s achievements. She could converse like a regular three-year-old at the age of nineteen months. She’s learned to roll over, sit, and pull herself up, and she’s walking with a walker at nearly three! Lacey Bower’s grin is nearly always infectious, and she seems to be born with intrinsic tenacity and drive.
This is what Mom and Dad credit her exceptional improvement to. Living with Lacey enables her parents to see God’s power in action on a daily basis. “Every day, you get to witness a miracle,” Michael said. “It’s truly incredible because she was standing for the first time a year ago,” he continues. I am certain that we will eventually be able to remove her walker. She has that drive.”
