Captain Ronald Smith, a pilot for United Airlines, flew his final flight in 2017, capping off a spectacular 32-year career. Everyone on board, including Captain Smith, expected the trip from Chicago to Brussels to be an amazing adventure.
A group of teenage passengers, including members of the Lycée des Garçons d’Esch-sur-Alzette choir in Luxembourg, learned of Captain Smith’s retirement on this final trip. When they learned about the important event, they impulsively decided to commemorate the captain in their own unique way.
After the plane had landed, these conscientious students waited patiently for the other passengers to depart and Captain Smith to emerge from the cockpit. When he arrived, they started singing a stunning acapella version of Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida.” One of the pupils, Nicolas, recorded this heartfelt performance on film. The choir’s voices echoed throughout the cabin, producing an emotional and unforgettable moment for Captain Smith.
