Doctors prescribed Ozempic and placed the overweight man on weight management programs before they detected a 60-pound tumor within him. Thomas Kraut, 59, visited several doctors as his stomach continued to grow. According to reports, medical specialists mistook this for ‘fat’ and enrolled Thomas in weight reduction and nutrition courses, unaware of the cancer spreading inside him. Thomas, who is originally from Germany but now lives in Norway, began experiencing health concerns in 2011 as his stomach grew in size. Physicians diagnosed him with type 2 diabetes in 2012, but it wasn’t until 11 years later that they realized there was a severe problem.
“My stomach kept growing. Thomas explained that he visited various doctors before receiving clearance for a gastric sleeve in 2019. “The physicians only ever mentioned being overweight and diabetic. For several years prior to the gastric sleeve, I had to attend diet and exercise classes. When the physicians pushed on the German’s tummy, they discovered that the firm surface was not fat.” In addition, I had lost so much weight through diet and the Olympics that my face and arms were incredibly slender.” My stomach, on the other hand, was enormous. “The doctor even stated that I was malnourished,” Thomas commented. Concerned by what they had observed, the doctor promptly scheduled Thomas for a CT scan, which showed a huge tumor. Thomas continued, “It was a tremendous shock for me. The tumor damaged my right kidney.
Physicians diagnosed Thomas with a rare fatty tumor two weeks later, which consisted of several tiny malignant regions surrounded by fat. In September 2023, Thomas had a 10-hour operation to remove the tumor, which weighed 27 kg (60.18 lbs) and measured 52.3 cm (20.59 inches) in diameter. The procedure caused substantial damage to his body and part of his small intestine.
In addition, the treatment required the removal of Thomas’ right kidney. While Thomas’ health has improved significantly, malignant tissue continues to develop inside him. “I see a psychologist for treatment every two weeks. I have to see an oncologist twice a year since tumor tissue is still developing inside of me.” He explained that the tumor’s connections to several organs prevented its removal. Thomas has even filed a lawsuit against the physicians for failing to discover the malignancy. However, due to the tumor’s rarity, the doctors dismissed the lawsuit, claiming they couldn’t take responsibility for its identification. Thomas’ lawyer has already filed a protest to the dismissal. “My lawyer has objected; it will work out somehow,” Thomas assured us.
